The Most Photogenic Coworking Spot in San Mateo? My Headshot Session at WeWork San Mateo (400 Concar Dr)

I’ll be honest.

For the longest time, I associated WeWork with:

  • startup culture

  • overpriced office memberships

  • and, of course, the infamous Netflix documentary that kind of gave the brand a chaotic reputation

So even after moving to California, I never really thought:

“Yeah, let me go work from a WeWork.”

Until now.

And honestly?

I completely get the hype now.

How a Simple Headshot Session Turned Into a Creative Reset

I originally booked a room at the WeWork San Mateo location for a portrait/headshot session with a previous client.

She works remotely, and I wanted:

  • a professional-looking space

  • something affordable

  • good lighting

  • and an environment flexible enough for portraits and lifestyle shots

I ended up booking one of the podcast rooms because honestly… it was one of the most budget-friendly options I found.

Simple plan:

  • shoot a few clean headshots

  • maybe use the room a little

  • call it a day

Well…

Within an hour of being there, I completely fell in love with the entire environment.

The Energy of the Space Completely Caught Me Off Guard

The biggest surprise wasn’t even the office itself.

It was the feeling.

Everywhere I looked:

  • people were building something

  • editing something

  • pitching something

  • designing something

  • coding something

  • creating something

And weirdly enough, it felt incredibly motivating.

Not in a fake “hustle culture” kind of way.

More like:

“Wow… everyone here is genuinely trying to create a better life for themselves.”

As someone who moved from the South to San Francisco, this kind of urban creative work culture still feels surreal to me sometimes.

It’s weird. It’s intimidating. It’s inspiring. And honestly… really cool.

WeWork Feels Like the Gym — But for Your Brain

This was the exact thought I had sitting there editing afterward:

WeWork feels like going to the gym… but for your brain.

Everyone is:

  • focused

  • motivated

  • working toward something

  • contributing to society in some kind of way

And being surrounded by that kind of energy naturally makes you want to:

  • work harder

  • think bigger

  • stay organized

  • and create more

I genuinely left feeling creatively refreshed.

The Lighting Was Surprisingly Amazing for Photography

Now let’s talk from a photographer’s perspective.

The lighting in this space was BEAUTIFUL.

What started as:

  • simple podcast room portraits

quickly evolved into:

  • environmental headshots

  • common-area portraits

  • lifestyle content

  • candid-style work photos

because the natural light throughout the building was honestly stunning.

The space had:

  • soft modern lighting

  • minimal interiors

  • neutral tones

  • beautiful textures

  • large windows

  • clean architecture

Basically: my dream aesthetic.

Very:

  • modern

  • clean

  • minimal

  • startup chic

  • “California creative” energy

And honestly? The photos turned out so much better than I expected.

Why I Think Coworking Spaces Are Underrated for Creators

Before this experience, I thought coworking spaces were mostly for:

  • tech startups

  • remote workers

  • business meetings

But now?

As a photographer and content creator, I see SO much potential.

Spaces like this are perfect for:

  • UGC content

  • branding sessions

  • lifestyle portraits

  • editing days

  • client meetings

  • creative brainstorming

  • social media shoots

Without needing:

  • a full studio rental

  • expensive production space

  • or complicated setup

That’s huge for independent creatives.

The Free Coffee and Tiny Details Actually Matter

This sounds silly until you experience it.

But the:

  • free coffee

  • clean bathrooms

  • glass offices

  • comfortable seating

  • quiet work areas

  • fast WiFi

  • stocked kitchens

all add up mentally.

When you freelance, your environment affects EVERYTHING:

  • productivity

  • creativity

  • mood

  • focus

  • burnout

And this space genuinely made me feel:

  • calmer

  • more focused

  • more motivated

Which honestly surprised me.

Living in California Has Completely Shifted My Perspective

I think part of why this hit me so hard is because this lifestyle still feels new to me.

Coming from the South and now living in California, there are moments where I genuinely feel like:

“Wow… this is actually my life now.”

People here:

  • work differently

  • network differently

  • create differently

  • dream differently

And spaces like WeWork feel like a physical reflection of that culture.

Why I Could Actually See Myself Using WeWork Regularly

The funniest part?

I originally booked this space for ONE shoot.

Now I’m already thinking:

  • should I edit here more often?

  • should I bring clients here?

  • should I use this for UGC shoots?

  • should I work here weekly?

Because honestly… I kind of love it.

The Rise of Coworking Spaces in California

Coworking spaces have grown significantly throughout California as creators, entrepreneurs, and remote workers move away from traditional offices. Modern professionals increasingly value flexibility, inspiring design, community, and workspaces that feel more human and creative.

Final Thoughts: I Finally Understand the Appeal

I walked into WeWork thinking:

I walked out thinking:

“Wait… I actually want this lifestyle.”

And honestly? That surprised me.
