Chasing CharliXCX in San Francisco: Outside Lands Weekend, Amoeba Music & the Photos I Almost Got
There are photography assignments you plan for weeks.
And then there are days when you hear CharliXCX is going to be at Amoeba Music in San Francisco and think:
Well. I have a camera. Obviously I’m going.
That was basically how I ended up spending part of Outside Lands weekend standing outside Amoeba Music San Francisco on Haight Street with a crowd of very committed Charli fans, hoping for one clean frame.
Spoiler:
I did not get the perfect celebrity photograph I imagined.
But I did get something I honestly think is more interesting — a little snapshot of San Francisco pop culture in 2026.
The waiting. The outfits. The anticipation. The crowd energy. The very brief glimpse of Charli herself.
And, naturally, a little chaos.
Charli xcx, Outside Lands 2026 and a Very San Francisco Weekend
The timing couldn’t have been more perfect.
Charli xcx had just headlined Outside Lands 2026 in Golden Gate Park on Friday, August 7, bringing her newest era to San Francisco after the enormous cultural moment that was Brat. Her Outside Lands performance mixed newer, darker material with songs including “Club Classics” and “Von Dutch,” marking a pretty dramatic evolution from the neon-green phenomenon that dominated pop culture two summers earlier.
Then came Amoeba.
The original Q&A had been scheduled for Friday afternoon, but after fans raised concerns about trying to attend the event and still make it into Golden Gate Park for Charli’s 8:40 p.m. Outside Lands set, the appearance was moved to Saturday, August 8 at 6 p.m.
Amoeba ultimately listed the event as completely sold out. Entry required a wristband tied to an in-store preorder of Charli’s new album, Music, Fashion, Film.
So naturally, the Haight was buzzing.

Waiting Outside Amoeba With the Charli Angels
I arrived knowing my odds weren’t exactly fantastic.
This wasn’t a red carpet.
There wasn’t a press line.
There wasn’t a little piece of tape on the sidewalk saying:
Pete Muniz Photography, stand here please.
LOL.
Instead, fans and photographers were essentially trying to figure out where and when Charli might appear.
A bunch of us waited outside for well over an hour.
And honestly, that waiting became one of my favorite parts to photograph.
You had fans dressed for the weekend, people talking about the night before at Outside Lands, people clutching records, people watching every vehicle that pulled anywhere near Amoeba.
It was extremely:
San Francisco. Charli. Outside Lands. 2026.
Even when nothing was happening, something was happening.
And Then… She Came Through the Back
Of course she did.
After all that waiting near the obvious entrance, Charli arrived through the back.
Celebrity photography lesson number 4,392:
The obvious entrance is apparently never the entrance.
I managed to grab a few frames when I caught sight of her, but everything happened incredibly quickly.
Were they my dream Charli xcx portraits?
Absolutely not.
Some were blurry.
Some were rushed.
But technically?
I photographed Charli xcx in San Francisco during Outside Lands weekend.
I’ll take the win.

Inside Amoeba: The Q&A I Couldn’t Photograph
The actual event was extremely controlled.
Amoeba had made it clear beforehand that this was a Q&A only, not a performance or signing, and attendance was restricted to wristband holders.
So while Charli was inside, I stayed focused on what I could photograph:
the environment surrounding the event.
That’s something I’m learning to appreciate more as a photographer.
You don’t always need the celebrity dead-center in every photograph for the images to tell the story.
Sometimes the story is: the fans. The signs. The line. The anticipation. The record store. The neighborhood.
The fact that hundreds of people are collectively excited about the same artist at the exact same moment.
That’s culture. And that’s worth documenting too.
The Departure That Was Over Before I Knew It
After a while, I repositioned myself hoping I might catch a cleaner departure photograph.
The Q&A ended sooner than I expected, after roughly 20 minutes from my perspective, amid some commotion inside.
Suddenly, everything started moving.
Charli came out and went almost immediately into a waiting Escalade.
And just like that:
gone.
I didn’t get the shot. Not even remotely. 😂
One of Amoeba’s managers also made it clear afterward that the rear parking area was private property and wasn’t somewhere I should have been positioned.
Fair enough. Lesson learned.
That’s part of doing this in real environments: knowing when to push creatively, but also knowing when a location has set a boundary.
And, yes, I would very much like Amoeba to forget my face before the next cool artist comes through.
What I Actually Came Home With
Here’s the funny thing.
I originally went there thinking:
I need a great photograph of Charli xcx.
But looking through everything afterward, this became a much more interesting little photo essay about the people around her.
I came home with photographs of:

anticipation before the Q&A
a few fleeting images of Charli herself
and a very real look at what celebrity photography sometimes actually looks like
Not every shoot ends with the hero image.
Sometimes you get the atmosphere instead.
And I’m learning that the atmosphere can be just as valuable.
Photographing Celebrity Moments Is Completely Different
This also gave me a new appreciation for photographers who do this professionally every day.
With my usual work — portraits, events, companies, restaurants, architecture — I typically have some level of control.
I know:
where the subject is going to be.
Where the light is.
When they’re arriving.
What I’m expected to capture.
Celebrity photography?
LOL.
You get approximately three seconds and someone’s shoulder is probably in your frame.
It requires a completely different instinct.
You’re anticipating movement rather than directing it.
And weirdly?
I loved that.
From Brat Summer to Whatever Comes Next
What made the whole day especially interesting was seeing how much Charli’s world has evolved.
Brat became much bigger than an album.
It became a color.
A design language.
A aesthetic.
A summer.
A whole internet personality.
But by Outside Lands 2026, Charli was already pushing into something different. Coverage of her San Francisco set described a darker, more guitar-driven presentation around her new album Music, Fashion, Film.
And yet standing outside Amoeba, you could still feel the residual energy of the Brat era everywhere.
That’s what made photographing the fans so fun.
Culture doesn’t switch eras overnight.
It blends.

Amoeba Music Is Still Such a Perfect San Francisco Setting
There’s also nowhere this could have happened that would have felt more correct than Amoeba Music San Francisco.
The San Francisco store opened in 1997 inside a former bowling alley near the eastern edge of Golden Gate Park, and Amoeba describes the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood’s history of music and free expression as a natural home for the store.
You have:
Haight Street.
Vinyl.
Outside Lands happening down the road.
Charli xcx inside a record store.
Fans covering the sidewalk.
It’s almost aggressively San Francisco.
And I mean that affectionately.
Would I Try This Again?
Unfortunately…
yes. 😂
Would I do a few things differently?
Also yes.
I’d research access points better.
I’d be more strategic about where I’m allowed to position myself.
And I’d probably bring an even more intentional long-lens setup if I knew I wouldn’t have much physical access.
But I loved the unpredictability.
There’s something extremely exciting about photographing a moment that isn’t being created for you.
You either catch it…
or you don’t.
Final Thoughts: Sometimes the Almost-Shot Becomes the Story
Did I walk away with the definitive portrait of CharliXCX?
No.
Did I spend over an hour waiting for approximately a few seconds of usable access?
Yes.
Did I nearly get completely outplayed by an Escalade?
Also yes.
But I came home with something else:
a tiny visual time capsule of Charli xcx, Amoeba Music, Outside Lands and San Francisco in 2026.
And honestly, that’s why I keep bringing a camera everywhere.
You never really know what the story is going to be until you’re editing the photographs afterward.
Sometimes the picture you thought you were chasing isn’t actually the picture you needed.
