Tattooed Grit & Golden Light: Capturing Maddie’s Raw, Creative Soul
By Pete Muniz | San Francisco Portrait Photographer
If you know me, you know I love photographing people with stories—and Maddie’s story tattooed itself on my lens the moment we met up for coffee before the shoot. She’s a local tattoo artist, creative powerhouse, and someone who brings effortless edge and authenticity to every space she walks into. This session? It wasn’t just a photoshoot—it was a full-on vibe.
Vibes, Coffee & Conversation
Before we even clicked the shutter, Maddie and I met up for coffee at a small local spot to chat and catch up. She told me about how she got into tattooing, her early days working out of a private studio, and what it means to leave permanent art on people’s skin. Hearing her talk about ink, healing, and expression set the tone for everything. It wasn’t just about portraits—it was about honoring her energy.
Industrial Backdrops Meet Streetwear Edge
We shot this in an urban spot tucked away in the heart of the city—where brick walls meet rusted textures, and late golden light hits just right. Maddie showed up in her signature look: a black ribbed tank, checkered pants, boots, and that classic black beanie. The whole aesthetic screamed alternative, bold, and beautiful—exactly like her tattoos.
What made this shoot hit different was how relaxed it felt. We weren’t rushing poses or chasing light—we were just vibing, letting the space, light, and her energy guide us. Some of the shots came alive in alleyway shadows, others in golden reflections. We even snapped a few in black and white for that timeless, moody feel. Honestly, it felt like shooting a spread for an alt-magazine.
Why I Love Working with Tattoo Artists
There’s something about photographing tattoo artists that always lights me up. Their entire life is visual. They understand composition, symbolism, and permanence—so they bring a level of trust and creativity to shoots that’s unmatched. Maddie let me experiment, lean into contrast and warmth, and highlight the small details: her arm ink, her piercing stare, her quiet confidence.
